If indeed you didn't use the song before battles, and, somehow you got silenced, well, you'd get slaughtered. And, if you didn't have a save close to where you died, well, not good.
(True Story. During my "Specialist Mages, and the bard recording their deeds" game. I usually had that song playing constantly.. after I had the unfortunate accident above.)
