The first step to playing online is to change the mode. On the opening screen, where you would create or load a game, is a button at the top which says "single player". Click on it, and it gives you the options of how you wish to connect.
There aren't many people playing IWD online. Unfortunately, the multiplayer for HoW has some timelag issues. It works best if you just have IWD installed (with patch 1.06) and not the expansions.
I don't know that much about it, really.
