You will rarely find a weapon better then +4 for general use. There are +5,6,7 weapons, but they have specific uses...

Eg, +3,+5 Vs Salamanders

or +4,+7 Vs Evil creatures (yeah you know what Im talkin about)

It is, therefore, necessary to change weapons occasionally. I usually try to keep hold of a 'general use' weapon, +4 swords are usually the best youll find. Then use specialist weapons for specialist situations.
Also, dont forget the different types of damage, eg, for areas with lots of skeletons use a 'crushing' weapon type etc...
