Bardic Horn of valhalla isn't that good... it summons 2-4 huma berserkers that fight hard but are very (and I mean very) stupid. They kill enemy and reamain standing where they were.
But taking a bard IS a good idea. Bards have good lore( With lore you can identify things without identify spell/scroll), can sing songs and cast magick up from level 2. Oh, and pickpocket also if you do not have thief or dont want to waste thief points to pickpocket.
Minor spoiler---
I'd recommend you to play forward till Dragobs eye level 3 where you can fight cold wights. Very easy to kill and they give 1400-1500 exp each. There you can level your new characters up a bit.
Also, take a multiclassed thief, mayde Thief/mage or thief/fighter so you can open some tough locks and find traps.
