I think with TotSC introduced, it produced two definate ways to kill your party members and ruin (or be realistic) your game.
1) was as you describe, leaving your members on the Island. This is quite annoying!

If you get infected with Lycanthropy, and dawdle (without realising you have been infected),there is no time to get onto the ship and off the isle. This means you will always die, and there is no way around it.
It's a bit annoying, and you've just got to hope to get away with it!
