There's a program called Gatekeeper which you can download if you follow this link. It allows you to edit the main content of your save files, particularly the characters. Other than that, you could either start over, or follow a slightly more complicated procedure which works like this:

Export your character on the character record screen.
Save your game.
Leave BG and open your Baldurs Gate folder (It can be found either directly on the harddisk or in the program files folder, depending on where you've installed it).
Open the save folder.
Cut the folder with the name of your save behind the initial row of numbers, and paste it in the mp_save.
Start a multiplayer game (you may need to temporarily increase the cache size under "configutate" in the screen you get when you run BG).
Load your own save.
Delete the main character, and import your own character. It's exactly the same, but you can change the name now.
Lock the characters by clicking on the v's, and play the game.
Save the game.
Move the folder from mp_save back to save to be able to play on in singleplayer mode with your renamed character.
You can also reset the cache if harddisk space is in short supply.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think that may mess up your spellbook if you play a mage. Other than that, it's pretty safe.
