I still haven't used most of them I'm somewhat ashamed to say. This is due in part to multiple starts to see how a particular character class fares, and attemtps to solo the game with different characters. I suppose the most ambitious NPC choice to date is the inclusion of Quayle as a replacement for Viconia - a very poor trade-off - though one I made for role play reasons.
I quite like Xzar and Montaron. They're effective enough if used and equipped properly. It is true though that the problem with the thiefly types is the lack of control over ability point disposition.
For me the biggest reason not to take an NPC isn't alignment, class, stats, disposition, starting spells, thief skills or voice, the real decider for me is the amount of time it has taken me to get to the position of actually recruiting some of them. By then, I've spent so much time building up each character, I feel slightly agrieved that I might have to drop them to take another one just for the sake of completeness. I probably will one day, just not now.
