The book (& the SoA book) largely ignore all NPC's & side-quests. Most of the people you meet (Imoen, Jaheira, etc.) are in there, but just imagine if you took a plain Human Fighter only through the essential quests & ignored all other NPC's & side-quests & you'll get a pretty good idea of how "interesting" the books are.
