Your assumption is correct the icon is just a function of the cows being friendly npcs.
Do you have HoW expansion. I believe the locked door you see is the way to get to lonelywood when the expansion is installed. If you don't have the HoW expansion you will not be able to open the door.
Last thing- my mage is level eleven and has written several level six and seven spells, but has no spot to memorize them. What am I doing wrong?
