the mage spell web is the most effective as creatures cought in a web is hit automaticly.
A tactic to use against melee-monsters: Give one character all the best protective gear and have him run around, while the rest stand back and use missile weapons.
Personally I always play on insane difficulty - The monsters do hit for double damage, but also give double xp. Definately worth it - (if you can survive
