IIRC they get a +1 bonus to hit with slings (and just slings), so it isn't that big a bonus - especially later in the game.
As a Fighter/Thief, you have access to additional weapons that a thief wouldn't normally have; you may take any proficiency, but as you know, only to 'specialisation' level. So there isn't a problem.
