If you click on the statues outside each tomb it'll tell you a bit about the person that's intered inside. If you time you move right, you shouldn't have any trouble from the lich if you kill him outside and move in. He'll reappear near the end of the tomb corridor, and unless you uncover the fog-of-war, you won't even se him "die".
