I had a bard in my party when I played IWD/HoW/ToLM recently. Bards are quite useful in IWD/HoW:

1. They serve well as secondary mages.
2. Their bard song ability is quite useful (especially the regenerating one) - only if HoW is installed.
3. There are some nice instruments that a bard can use.
4. They have the highest lore ability amongst all classes. Frees up one or more level 1 slots (no need to memorise identify spell)
