TCor, the following combinations were in my perty and it worked out great:
Gnome Cleric/Illusionist - an absolutely fantastic support character who saved by party on many ocassions. I won't have a party now without this multi-class.
Between this guy and my straight cleric they really complimented each other in the spell department, i.e., healing spells for starters.
Elf Fighter/Mage - never played one before and was an after thought to filling my sixth spot. This guy rocked! As a fighter I used him mainly for ranged weapons and as for the spells I had him working beautifully with my Gnome. This multi-class also saved my party on many occassions.
Straight Cleric - If you're going to play on insane mode this is a necessity. You won't be sorry.
* By the way, did you play Heart of Winter along with the free download Trials
of the Luremaster? If you haven't, go for it! Burial Island is a real
challenge and if you're going to do TotL on insane mode you either deserve a
medal OR a trip to your local State Mental Hospital.
