You have to use the fire or acid to actually strike the killing blow on the trolls, by the way. Injuring them with it won't keep them down, at least not that I've seen. I found the oil flasks to be quite useful for this task, but be careful! Your party members can be injured when if they stand too close when the flask is thrown.
