When you come out of the "door to the surface", you appear on a small screen. To the bottom left, there is an exit back to the Ice Palace. The the top-right, there is an exit back to the world map. To the bottom right there is a cave. Enter there to get to lower dorns deep.
Another way to get to this screen, is on the main screen (that shows the Ice palace, exit at the top right. (I believe that this is the cave that you mentioned that crashes.) Go back into the palace if this does crash, and exit through the big door that was previously locked before you freed the slaves.
