This was my favorite party and they did very well:
Auril Striate- Male, Human, Paladin
Axhind Orckiller- Male, Dwarf, Fighter
Kendal Oakenshield- Male, Half Elf, Ranger/Cleric
Galrond Spellbinder- Male, Elf, Mage
Ariel Wishsong- Female, Elf, Bard
Damson Lightfoot- Female, Gnome, Illusionist/Thief
I gave Axhind proficiencies in axes and warhammers and he killed everything in sight. Auril and Kendal could fight and heal, and the rest all could cast spells.
