Never played a bard before (except for Bard's Tale, lol). How does the bard song in IWD work?

Is it a "one use per day" sort of thing, or more like a cleric's turn undead or a thief's find traps, where you "switch it on" and can do no other action except movement?

Does the bard need an instrument to be able to use the bard song ability?

Is it even worth having a bard (even if multi-classed) in IWD/HoW?
