I like creating my own party. Even when I play BGII, I start off with 1 character, then I'll get fed up that there isn't a particular class or kit on offer amongst the NPCs so I'll dump an NPC and create a second PC to add to my party...
Then a little while later, I'll wish that one particular NPC had proficiencies in Flails instead of maces, or should have dualled at a different level, or shouldn't have dualled - and so I create a 3rd character to add...
And so on. Thank goodness for multiplayer mode in BGII which enables you to play IWD style...
