Yeah, I'll echo Gnomes as the most underestimated race. Sure, some people might have legitimate gripes about their being forced to be Illusionists, and not being able to Dual, but most of the Gnomes' negative PR is about their size and their bearded ladies. But come to grips with this: A pure Gnomish Fighter will beat a pure Human Fighter any day: Better Saving Throws.

For most underrated class, I'd have to say Cleric/Thief. It's actually a very valid combo, it's just that the circumstances have conspired against it. Due to the "shortage" of bottom-row buttons, Cleric/Thieves can only have 1 Quick Weapon, and their Thieving skills are hidden behind their Special Abilities button. (Of course, I'll bet you use those "Talk" and "Guard" buttons all the time, don't you?) And they got screwed for weapons as well; the only 1-handed weapon they can Backstab with is the Club, and there are NO enchanted Clubs in BG1; there's one in ToSC, but you have to beat the most annoying quest in the game in order to get it. So the Cleric/Thief is actually a decent class, it just wasn't taken into consideration that much when designing the game.

Personally, I think Druids, Bards, and F/C/Ms all have bad reputations for a reason. (Bards and Druids get better in BG2, though.)
