I disagree. The role-playing is non-existant, but the story is actually better than BG2! BG1 is the best.

You and your chums are adventurers who have ventured to Easthaven. You are hired amonst many others to save an old tree (very big). You start off, but an avalanche kills everyone except your group (who saw that one coming?).
You arrive and your mission leads you through armies of undead and lizards, through countless caverns and catacombs. You also discover the age old feud between the elves and dwarves. Hey I'm beginning to like this. perhaps IWD is not so bad after all. Beware, conversation is zil in IWD. No talking, all very hush hush. Lots of fighting if that's your thing.
