Your characters are "autosaved" in the character folder when you finish IWD. My understanding was that the characters are saved individually after the final battle (but I have seen conflicting posts that indicate they are saved before).

If you want to play HOW after having beaten IWD, you can always start an expansion only game and import these characters. When you are creating a character, select "import" and look for characters named IWD1 thru IWD6. THESE are the final versions of your characters.
