Ace,

If you want help from tech support, avoid the Bioware and Interplay forums totally. Go to the Black Isle forums and try posting directly to "RACHEL", she is one of the mods in the IWD forums and is EXTREMELY helpful. (Right now may be a bad time as BIS is pushing big time to speed up the release of IWD2).

However, try some of these things in the meantime.

(1) Make sure that you haven't installed an inappropriate patch.
Go to windows explorer. Find the main directory where IWD is installed. Search for a file called IDMain.exe and right click on the name. In the pull down menu, select "properties" and then in the window that opens up, select Version.

Here's how it breaks down:

V1.4.2 = IWD + HOW + TOL

V1.4.1 = IWD + HOW + HOW Patch (v1.4.1)
V1.4.0 = IWD + HOW

V1.0.6 = IWD + Latest IWD patch (v1.0.6)

Make sure that you haven't installed an HOW patch over an IWD only installation or an IWD patch over TOL or HOW. That can causes some severe problems. Also make sure that you have now used the wrong language version of a patch as well.

(2) Try uninstalling and reinstalling, and use the patch guide above. I know, I know ... tech tells you to do that all the time, but surprisingly it helps out a lot of the time. Errors such as yours can often be caused by bad file copies off the cd.

(3) Try copying each cd onto your hard drive. Sounds strange BUT there are a batch of BAD CD's floating around and this is a great way to check to see if that is your problem. If the copy routine starts to hang up, this is a sure sign that your cd is bad. Make note of the file that the copy hangs on as it is possible to replace the corrupted file. If the CD IS bad, it IS possible to return it for a replacement.

(4) Try turning off 3D acceleration, and EAX sound.

(5) Make sure that you are playing the game with NOTHING else running in backgroun. Turn off instant messenger programs, Norton anti-virus - in short: EVERYTHING!

There are some other things to try but those are the first and obvious potential problem areas. Try those out and see what happens.

General request:

Folks - if you are going to request help, it can be really useful to the people trying to troubleshoot your problem if you provide some DETAILS! Listing the exact error message as ACe-Logan did is EXTREMELY useful, but including details about which expansions andpatches are installed, the type of installation, and your operating system can be really useful. If it's a graphics problems, listing the type of video card that you have is also pretty helpful.
