I went through there as a solo fighter. You can just bash the chests open. Click on your weapon icon so that it has a red outline. Then when you move the mouse pointer over the chests you'll get the attack cursor. Click and bash. You can open locked doors the same way.
However, most of the chests in this room are trapped. You'll just have to suffer the damage. Nothing else a pure fighter can do.
