In defense of roleplaying... Sure, I wouldn't expect a level 9 fighter with an intelligence of 10 to say, "Hey guys, this is a Clay Golem. No pointy weapons."
However, I do think that a high-level Mage with a high Intelligence score *would* know how to beat a lich or golem. After all, a Mage would have likely come across the procedures for *building* golems, or becoming a lich, right?
