You'll never get as powerful as you see Irenicus in the cutscenes, so I wouldn't make that my goal. You can get a pretty powerful char through shadowkeeper though.
For items, I'd get 2 rings of gaxx, robe of vecna, amulet of power. I think for saving throws, you want to get as low as you can and same with THAC0, but I'm not sure on those. There might be a value somewhere to decrease your casting time to almost nothing so it's like you have Improved Alacrity cast, but you might have to make/download an item for that.
