I forgot to tell you that I would kill off one monster and then retreat through the portal. Cast "resist fear' and the re-enter the room, all the while staying away from the stairs. Trying to detrap with Imoen did not work because she would be instantly attacked and killed. Stay away from the stairs and you should do okay.
