There are a few other spell descriptions in the manual that give a more fanciful idea of what the spell does. Not all of the components of the AD&D spell system could be implemented, presumably due to engine limitations.
The best way to understand exactly what a spell does (or should do) is to read the description given when you right-click on the spell icon. At least it tells you how the spell was implemented in the BG series.
