There is one other option available.

You can dual class Imoen, she makes an excellent mage. I am not a big fan of dual classing but I did this in my last game and she is one slot but is worth two party members. If you do go this route I recommend going to level 5 as a theif without TotSC and level 6 if you have the expansion. Concentate most of your theif skills in traps and locks. Before you know it (By the time you get to the city) she will get her thief skills back and you can ditch any theives in your party. Plus you get to make your own mage the way you want the mage to be.
