Whoops. Sorry about that, but the way your wrote it it was ambiguous.
What else could have given you problems? You may have been to low a level. I would recomend level 3, level 2 minimum. But its possible to get there at level 1. Leveling dosent improve your combat ability that much (except for mages) but it does give you extra HP which are far more important.
Or you might not have been using the right tactic. Hidden thief scouting (cept for that *damn* bridge on level three, when you need detect traps on), then the main group attacks with whatever tactical advantage you can get. Of course you need to put a fair few points into Hide in Shadows for that to be viable. Its easier with a protagonist thief since you can distribute your points to your liking.
Or, my way, a decent Tank in your best armour, large shield, boots of avoidance (I think you can get them before nashkel, not 100% sure) and draw out the kobolds any way you can.
Theres a ring of "protection from normal missiles" in DSotSC, does anyone know if its in regular BG as well? Some dwarven merchant in the bassilus sector. Anyway, if you can get your hands on that little beauty you can ignore all except kobold commando's arrows.
Of course, its all academic now, but learning to use these kinds of tactics (and loads more, I am rusty on BG1 tactics and items) will save you lots of reloading in future battles.
