that happens when you fail one of the hell tests at the end of SOA. If you a)killed the dragon rather than talking to it, b) took the cloak of nymph skins, c) killed the genie, d) allowed your NPC to die, or e)gave into your anger with Sarevok, you'll become NE (unless you're already CE or NE).
