Most defintely a bug .. since he's supposed to drop it. Has happened before though.
1. Do you have ToB ? , if so .. use "Tab" to see any objects on the ground.
2. The key might be under a door .. you wont be able to pick it up or see it that way .. or worse, its in a wall ( happens ).

I'll see what the CLUAConsole code for the key is, so you can warp it in if all else fails. If you dont know what CLUAConsole is :
