What I think is that Irenicus didn't see as torture.He didn't enjoy doing those things he just did them to promote his own work,his own goal.In my oppinion he remained the cold blooded villian that he was even when commiting atrocities.THAT would make him truly,truly evil.
He saw all this as a means to an end while Imoen on the other hand...
