Throw some summoned undead creatures (immune to mind control) at them. Your Clerics should be able to summon Skeleton Warriors by now. Then attack with ranged weapons.
When I encountered Carston, I moved immediately north away from the machine. No creatures were summoned and I was allowed to venture.
