Neither. Both. Really, it's all a matter of your playing style, rather than whether one character is "better" than another.
Just as long as you have a melee-tank, thief-type, cleric-something and mage-something in your party, you should have all the bases covered. Beyond that, it's up to what you want to do. The most important thing is to include characters you like, and enjoy playing with.
