Seriously, my favorite character to date is my Wild Mage. I'd have to agree with everything J'aran has said - the Wild Surges really aren't that big of an issue, especially as you reach the higher levels. I can't tell you how grateful I was to be able to cast one Nahal's and gain an extra 9th level spell nearly every time. Sure you get the occasional negative surge, and some of them are rather humorous, I'll admit - but I honestly would not ever go back to a "normal" mage, specialist or otherwise.
Besides being that much more effective, I also find it a bit more interesting. Those few times that I did get a truly negative surge, it usually just presented an additional challenge, which made the game a little bit more fun for me.
