Don't underestimate the power of a Wild Mage. If you're not casting Nahal's Reckless Dweomer, the chance of getting a wild surge is only 5%, so that's not too big.
An advantage of a Wild Mage is their versatility: they get the extra spell slot per level of a specialist Mage, but at the same time they have access to all spell schools, unlike a specialist.
Furthermore, Nahal's gives them an opportunity to cast any spell they know, for the cost of only a level one spell. Granted, Nahal's always triggers a wild surge, but their level is added to the roll, and you can further enhance it by protecting yourself with Chaos Shield. This will ensure that, at higher levels, wild surges will usually have positive results rather then negative ones.
Believe me, a high level Wild Mage is a force to be reckoned with.
