Entirely depends on what your character is and what you want from a party. He rocks as a single class fighter, but can also be dualed into a mage (has 18 int) or a thief (17 dex)
Considering Jan is the only thief who can level up in ToB I'd say go with the thief option if you're going to dual class.
Imoen, Edwin or Nalia are all already good mages.
Still, I imagine he'd make a great fighter-mage.
