I have two mages in my party but they seem to fill three roles...1) Hasting my fighters (Especially my character who is a fighter/thief because when he is hasted his bow becomes a machine gun basically) 2) Disposing of large groups of annoying monsters (for example any large group of Kobolds, Skeletons, or Xvarts get dealt with whit a quick Fireball) 3) Using Magic missile repeatedly on big enemies while my fhighters hack and slash.

I suppose that I could get through without them although I have never tried but it is nice to have them around.
