Welcome to the forum! A mage isn't necessarily a key part of any party. Much of bg1 can be handled by a strong sword arm and a bow. Mages are more of a color character, to add depth to bg, than a necessary item, although they are entirely helpful in various situations. Bg2? now that's where mages are necessary, and it's very difficult to get through the game without some type of spellcaster.
