Buy/Find/Steal a spell on a scroll. If you right click on the scroll in your backpack you should see a "write to book" button. Clicking on this button has a good chance, depending on intelligence and many other factors, of adding the spell to your mage book. Whether you suceed or not, the scroll is lost. Your book has different pages for different level spells. Specialist mages can only write certain types of spells.
