I think if you save just before playing, maybe on the same section of the maze, you will get the same result. I'm not sure about this, but I noticed that when I tried reloading I kept getting the same card (like you, plague), but the last time I played I seem to remember reloading once and actually winning both the rounds (I don't remember where exactly I had saved). So it is possible to win, but it seems to that the result is decided just after you enter that section itself.
I just killed the guy the second time
("Oh well", thought my Paladin "It's nice to meet a polite demon, it will be a shame to kill him, but a demon's a demon, you know.. what can you do.")
