You're doubtless familiar with the Infinity Engine, which uses two dimensional sprites and backgrounds with a few three dimensional effects a la Baldur's Gate, right? Well, the Aurora engine is entirely 3D. Not sure if you've ever played Vampire: The Masquerade, but it is similar to that. However, it looks like they are doing some very interesting things, specifically with lighting effects and draw-distances. So I guess the main difference in engines is that Aurora looks a lot prettier. Obviously, the switch from 2D to 3D will necessitate some game play alterations too. How the actual game mechanic will operate remains to be seen...
