Yes they were specialist. The first time through I had Dynaheir, and the second time through with Edwin and "Golum my lawful evil Gnome Fighter/Illusionist." I guess that would explain the second slot.
Now I am surprised the one slot gets mentioned so much because I thought every one used specialist mages. Even Xan is a specilist.
