My strategy has always been to only spend my gold on the items that you can't find. With the exception of ammo of course. So if I'm heading back from the Nashkel Mines (victorious) and have 1500 gp in my pocket and a dying urge to upgrade my party, I wait. Because the Plate Mail or the +1 Longsword that you may be able to afford, can easily be found or taken off a body later as you venture off and do some side-quests. So my advice to you would be just to... play the game. Don't worry about buying that Shadow Armor, that Crossbow of Speed, those Robes of Evil Arch Magi, just go off discover some side quests, and DO NOT waste your money in the beginning of the game on things that can be found while adventuring. Good luck!
