It's true; in the end you don't know what to do with your gold.

But about gold earning. Sometimes when I want some money but don't have good thieving skills yet, I try this:

Go to the map of commander Brage (area 4100);(best move along the sides of the maps you have to move through, or search the safest way); You can walk straight to Brage and he won't fight you; you just have to give the right answer to his question; fairly easy; next thing: you are in the tempel of Nashkel and receive gold and exp.
