Yaga-Shura and his improved fire giants are dead. The garrison at the entrance to the cave were dealt with by casting Mass Invisibility and Improved Haste on Korgan and Amschat before entering the cave and moving into one of the side rooms. I then summoned Kitthix, 3 Mordy's Swords and a Fallen Deva. After about 5 minutes of frantic fighting including 4 Timestops and 3 Energy Blades castings, they finally fell.
The rest of the fire giants were dealt with by Korgan alone, after accidentally discovering that Sancchudoku completely breaks the fire giants down if it hits a giant before the giant hits you. I only equipped the thing because I wanted to give Korgan his HP back as Viconia had run out of healing spells. Korgan has 110% Fire Resistance and a save vs spell of -2, so he was very capable of beating 6 improved fire giants on his own provided he stood on some of the damaging lava and of course wielding Sancchudoku.
As for Yaga-Shura, the giants in his army are improved, as is Yaga-Shura himself. (Well, he has the Fireshield and the Lower Fire Resistances) Berenn however, remains unimproved, this is a disappointment, as he gives more exp than the regular giants in the cave although conversely, improving him would just lead to Sancchudoku cheese.
Edit. As for actual progress, I have reached Amkethran. The Improved Oasis fight was very well made and surprisingly challenging. The loot came to about 200,000 gold as well. Once I reached Amkethran, I ran into 2 copies of Rayic Gethras, who both demanded their signet ring back. They then both attacked, so I had a 2 for 1 deal of angry mages to kill. (This is an unfinished quest line from SOA, possibly from Unfinished Business.) After a longish fight, I managed to take out the 2 Rayic's and their 4 Cowled Enforcers. (2 each) All that I did after that was abuse the Smugglers to get 1.5million GP and a mass Item Upgrade binge, which cost 500,000 GP.
