Well first of all there's an extra 'A' in my usage of the acronym, so I was in fact referring to second ed AD&D which came later on (1989 I think)
Anyway, I was merely making a logical assertion that the first PnP group we played with as a whole possibly may have influenced how we prefer to pronounce 'drow'.
