I use all three styles. What style you use depends on the situation. Since you have Aerie around, it is even better, because you have a healer/buffer around.
Against most minions, a shield will deflect most of the damage. Against bosses however, shields in general are... pointless( except in certain cases where you need Immunity to Charm or such).
