They are immune to the damage, but are still hit by the weapon. This is different than the weapon being ineffective. When the monster is immune, they get hit, and all other affects that trigger on a hit are used. That means if clay golems could cast spells, you could attack them with any weapon of +1 or better and disrupt the spell. Similarly, the illusionary werewolves in the circus do no damage, but will still interrupt a spell. On an ineffective hit, nothing happens except fireshields and a few other triggers that I don't remember off the top of my head.
